Curriculum Vitae
Michele McDannold is an American poet, editor, publisher and literary activist. She was the Editor-in-Chief at Red Fez Publications for over five years. She is the founder of The Literary Underground, a grassroots effort committed to supporting independent artists, promoting diversity in creativity and fostering community in the small press. Michele is currently the editor/publisher for Citizens For Decent Literature Press. Her poetry has been published in numerous online and print publications in the USA and abroad.
Editing and Publishing Experience
Associate Editor (2007), Red Fez Publications. Responsible for first round editing of poetry and fiction submissions for quarterly issues.
Editor (2007), Lit Circus, Guild of Outsider Writers. Responsible for working with authors and choosing content for a frequently updated online journal.
Founding Editor/Publisher (2007-2010), Rural Messengers Press. Responsible for choosing, editing and publishing content for various print projects including chapbooks, mail art, broadsides and leaflets. Developed and published the online publication, Side of Grits, as a project of Rural Messengers Press.
Editor-in-Chief (2007-2012), Red Fez Publications. Responsible for final copy of monthly issues, management of editorial staff and staff writers (reviews and columns), press releases, award nominations, submissions notifications, development of website sections and offerings (added an internet radio show, nonfiction, audio and video sections to the online publication), edited and published the first print publication (Red Reader #1), and organized and curated the first poetry festival hosted by Red Fez in conjunction with Zygote in my Coffee.
Director of Print and Special Projects (2012), Red Fez Publications. Responsible for the development, editing and publishing of print projects and organizing and curating literary events.
Founding Editor/Publisher (2012 – ), Citizens for Decent Literature. Responsible for choosing, editing and publishing content for the quarterly print zine and frequently updated online publication.
Associate Editor (2012), The Daughters of Bastards (Punk Hostage Press), a book by Iris Berry. Responsible for copy editing.
Editor/Publisher (2013), Random Acts of Terror, a book of poetry by Luis Rivas. Responsible for final edit and book design of the perfect bound 76 page poetry book.
Editor (2014), This Is Poetry Volume I: Women of the Small Press, anthology. Responsible for soliciting, choosing content, editing and layout.
Organizations
Member (2007-2008). The Guild of Outsider Writers, a community of independent and micro-presses, bloggers and authors focused on spreading the word about “outsider” writing, inviting debate about publishing ethics and sharing resources within the small press. Successful projects included: Preliminary judge for the Jack Micheline Memorial Poetry Contest which resulted in the publication of Down Where the Hummingbird Goes to Die by Justin Hyde.
Member (2008-2009). APA Centauri, a general interest APA (Amateur Press Association).
Founder (2010). The Literary Underground, a grassroots organization committed to fostering community in the independent press by providing web space, information and resources for individuals, presses, publications and organizations involved in independent publishing. Successful projects to date include: The Literary Underground Wiki, Project U Radio, Archives Directory, and Citizens for Decent Literature APA (Amateur Press Association), CFDL Zine and online publication.
